New generic Top Level Domains.
When and how?
Last June ICANN announced the liberalisation of new and potentially unlimited new generic Top Level Domains. After a few months of this announcement, ICANN also released the first version of the Applicant Guidebook describing the processes and requirements necessary for applying and registering a new gTLD.
The liberalisation of the new gTLDs, as well as the first Applicant Guidebook, raised strong critics in the Internet community and in brand owners especially. This is why ICANN decided to open a public space on its website to allow anyone to post a comment, feedback or suggestion in regards to this new important process.
The second draft of the Applicant Guidebook, which ICANN released at the end of last February, takes into consideration many of the observations that companies as well as trademark owners posted on this public forum. It is important to underline that this version of the Applicant Guidebook is not yet the final and definitive one and that one more is to follow in a few months.
